Hungry foot traffic along Heidke Street in Avoca need little direction to find classic American diner go-to, RJ’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Diner, as the bright red frontage makes it quite hard to ignore. Complete with red leather booths, chequered tiles and a life-sized picture of James Dean, all that’s missing is a Marilyn Monroe double or a long-haired dancing John Travolta in a suit. Elbow the jukebox, not too hard though, and take in some tunes along while you delve into a Fonzy bacon and egg burger with cheese, salad and sauce; or something different like the Moby Dick pizza with crab, prawns, mussels, garlic and oregano. Of course, leaving is difficult without having sampled an old style malted milkshake, or old time rock and roll soda float, but be sure to stay late to witness the karaoke.
